The College of Maasin (TCM) recognized 404 second-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students during its 21st Pinning and Capping Ceremony on October 8, 2026, at the Maasin City Gym, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward becoming professional nurses.
The ceremony opened with the processional, followed by the invocation, opening prayer, Philippine National Anthem, and welcome address. The program continued with the scripture reading by Ms. Dulce Mae P. Rose, RN, and a reflection by Rev. Lotis C. Fiel, accompanied by special songs from Nightingaleโs Chorale.
During the welcome address, the speaker expressed surprise at how calmly TCM nursing students performed injections on patients, emphasizing the importance of continued learning, practice, and growth.
โYour smile can be a light. Confidence can be a light. Compassion can be a light. Presence can be a light,โ the speaker said, challenging the students to keep their passion alive as they received their caps and pins.
The program proceeded with the presentation of candidates by Dean Miraluna B. Caturan, RN, MAN, LPT, followed by the acceptance delivered by Rev. Joshue Zuriel G. Tiempo, PhD. The consecration of caps, pins, and lamp was led by Ms. Hannah Mae B. Pateros, DHCM, RN, symbolizing the studentsโ commitment to the nursing profession.
During the capping and pinning ceremony, the students formally received their nursing symbols before Ms. Rosele Joy C. Balaquit, MAN, RN, introduced the guest speaker.
Mr. Marc Ryan V. Portuguez, DSCN, RN, CLDP, CHA, Governor of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Region VII and professor at Cebu Normal University, delivered the inspirational message, emphasizing that nursing extends beyond technical procedures and academic achievement.
โNursing is not only about memorizing drug information and getting high grades. It is about emotional intelligence,โ Portuguez stressed, highlighting the importance of understanding patients and treating them with dignity and compassion.
He encouraged the students to continue learning, ask questions, seek guidance, and embrace technological advancements while preserving the human connection essential to patient care.
Portuguez also introduced RISEโResilience, Integrity, Self-Growth, and Empowermentโas values that future nurses should carry throughout their professional journey.
He reminded the students that patients may not remember every procedure or lesson but will remember how they were treated, respected, and cared for during their most vulnerable moments.
The program continued with the inspirational song โDream It Possible,โ followed by the entrance of the Florence Nightingale, the Nightingaleโs Pledge, the nurseโs prayer, and the consecration song and prayer.
The ceremony concluded with the class song, closing remarks by Ms. Mytha F. Taganas, RN, closing prayer, alma mater song, and recessional.
As the 404 nursing students continue their training at TCM, the ceremony served as a reminder that receiving their caps and pins signifies more than academic progressโit marks their growing responsibility to serve with competence, integrity, and compassion.
With the challenge to keep learning, practicing, and growing, the future nurses were encouraged to keep the flame burning for every patient whose life they will touch.
